An Interest in Looking Around: Peter Alexander in California
This film, created in conjunction with the Langson IMCA exhibition Echoes of Perception, is an homage to Peter Alexander and his kinship with California Impressionism. It finds Alexander in his element — responding to his surroundings through his restless and relentless exploration of materiality in search of methods to harness the phenomenological enchantment he felt in the state he called home.
As a Toronto-born, San Fernando Valley-raised transplant who grew up traversing the landscapes of California, I immediately felt a connection to Peter's work. The feeling of dislocation can arise from living in an adopted homeland, but the natural world around me offers grounding and a respite from any culture shock I may feel. The environment is welcoming if you're willing to meet it on its own terms. I tried, in a small way, to capture that feeling.
